Thanks for your question. I try to keep both entirely separate. It can be hard work juggling my family life with a full time job but I try my best to do justice to both aspects of my life. It’s hard missing family events / celebrations because of rota demands but it’s to be expected in this job and you can only do so much.
I try to keep the 2 separate but as a manger I am responsible for things even if I am not at work. This means that I have to prepare the Practice for my absence when I go on holiday and catch up a lot when I get back. Staff tend to phone me at home anyway if there is a problem whilst I am off.
My outside life has definitely affected my work – for the better. since having children I’m a much better paediatrician and more sympathetic/ empathic towards families. I think its also important to have a pragmatic approach to work. Patients come with very practical queries often so my home life experiences are often useful.
