I was about 14-15 and wanted to do something that worked with people, enjoyed science and looked into medicine. Initially I was considering biomedical engineering (designing and making artificial joints, medical appliances etc.) – the careers officer said that the most rewarding aspect would be to be a doctor then engineer – as that way you could fit the designed appliances you’d worked on.
Also there was a medical TV comedy programme called MASH that I loved.
I’m a Nurse and it was my friend who saw the qualities of a nurse in me. I was working in a bar at the time with no idea what to do with my life. My friend was already a Student Nurse and advised me that I would make a good nurse. I really wasn’t sure but I didn’t have anything but the UCAS application fees to lose so I looked into it and applied. I was interviewed and accepted and haven’t looked back since.
I was encouraged to study medicine by my father who was a medical scientist as well as my A level chemistry teacher. I enjoyed arts and science subjects at school and saw medicine as a way to combine the two.
As a Practice Manager I am not following a medicine career but I took this job as it sounded and is very diverse and satisfying especially when I can help to improve a patient’s journey through the Health system
