1. The workload – it is heavy and intense at times. So its important to keep working steadily throughout the years – Cramming at the last minute doesn’t work in my view.
2. Getting used to your non-medic friends seeming to have so much more time off than you.
I did Nursing which is 3 years but I’ll still answer.
1. Getting used to getting up at 0530 and not getting home until 2100 on your placement days when everyone else in your flat is snoring fast asleep.
2. Learning to adapt to having a responsibility of caring for another individual. It weighed massively on me when I first started. I worried about every detail which made me quite ill.
The length of the course and the frequency of exams were some of the biggest challenges. I agree with Jonathan about non medics having more time off – some of my house mates doing arts subjects only had 8 hours of teaching per week whereas medical students had classes timetabled 9-5 everyday.
However I think the challenges are greater now as I didn’t have to pay tuition fees.
