I have just had it pointed out to me that you were referring to what I had put in my profile. The reason I was considering being a Police Cadet was the fact that I did not want an office bound 9 to 5 job but an outdoor active type one. I had taken part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and did the police force for my service part. This introduced me to what a Police Cadet did in their first 2 years of training and as it included a lot of sports, expeditions and outward bound courses I thought it sounded very good. I did apply and was told that it would depend on my O-level results as to whether or not I would get one of the very few places on offer each year so I looked for an alternative and chose the RAF who offered me a guaranteed job irrespective of my results but a better job if I got good results, which fortunately I did and so I started my 38 year RAF career a couple of months later and never actually went back to the Police. I think it was the best decision I have ever made as I have had a great life thanks to the opportunities the RAF gave me.
