      Hello Steven here, I was employed because of my lived experience and then trained whilst I was in my role.

      Three years working in healthcare with some training in illnesses and conditions, security and person-centred care. After that, three years at university getting the degree. After the degree, there’s further training (preceptorship to make sure you know what you’re doing) and mentor training (so you can teach students on placement).

      Nursing relies on staff continually developing their skills as well, so there are courses you can do in management, leadership, cultural issues, advanced medication training, new therapies etc. Some will go on to study at Masters level.

      Part of our job is to demonstrate we are keeping our skills up to date, so you never really stop studying.

      Richard here: One year for my arts foundation, three years for my art degree, and finally three years part time for my Masters in Art Psychotherapy – Seven years !!!

      mandy : you also have to do one year’s clinical experience, eg as a nursing assistant, before do you art the therapy course so you have experience of “clinical ” contact with people

      I had to go to medical shool at University which was 5 years, and I made some lifelong friends there. After that you train as a foundation doctor for 2 years where you learn the basics under supervision. Then you become a junior psychiatrist trainee for 3 years, and a senior trainee for another 3 years. After that you become a consultant. But within psychiatry you can do so many things like working with learning disability which is what I’m doing, or forensics, or with older people, or with younger adults and teenagers, so the possibilities are endless and you never get bored.

      It varies as to what job you want to do, for a doctor the degree (Medicine) takes between 4 and 6 years depending on where you study 🙂

      Then once you’ve qualified as a doctor, to be a consultant in psychiatry is around 8 years of further training 🙂
