I did some voluntary work at a hostel for people with mental health difficulties. Before I started I had lots of preconceptions about what they would be like – drug abusers, violent, manipulative etc – all based on TV/newspaper biases!
Working there however I worked with the most intelligent, caring, funny, warm and creative individuals who just happened to have a mental health problem making them who they were. It completely changed my prejudgements and I decided I wanted to work in mental health and train as a psychiatrist 🙂 I still keep in touch with some of them now!
I Wass fascinated by how the mind works and what makes people do what they do. The brain is amazing in that it houses all your memories and personality. I wanted to try and understand it better
Richard here: Coming from the arts, I’m interested in the “human condition” Shakespeare wrote in a midsummer nights dream as told by his character Theseus “The lover, and the poet / Are of imagination all compact”? We all experience the world thru our perceptions (the mind) they can be both wondrous as well as terrifying, they can be all things and nothing, the arts have long been the best medicine for a troubled mind!
To understand each other we have to use our imagination. (To mentalize)
