Edelle saw how much passion her oldest friend has as a nurse which inspired her. Jen says her mum inspired her as she was a ward sister. Gemma was inspired by an orthopaedic surgeon during her work experience.
I volunteered at a home for people with mental health problems and helped with taking them out, doing activities and going to appointments. It was really interesting caring for them, and helping them when they were both well and not so well, so I decided I want to be a psychiatrist.
Inspiration can come from many people in many ways, even if it is small thing. I saw my grandfather who was in the army suffer from dementia an it was heartbreaking, especially when he couldn’t remember who I was. I recall thinking the brain is the most important organ in my opinion and that I would like to help others in any way I can. Also I was really lucky enough to meet and have tea with Mother Theresa in Calcutta. I was at school at the time. She asked me to become a doctor and devote a life to help others as she had done. She was in her 80s and had more energy than me! I think she was definitely inspirational. If you look hard enough I think you can inspiration from everyone. For me, I always find something fascinating and can learn from each person I have ever encountered. One person was on the ward when I was a student, and he was bleeding from a burst vessel inside. Everyone was rushing around putting needles in him and doing tests. I remember thinking I couldn’t do much as I was just a student so I knelt down and held his hand. He looked at me just before he died and said that out of all these people he thought I was doing the most important job. He inspired me in realising that what you may think is a small thing may be seen very differently by others, and compassion should never ben forgotten.
Kiki here – when I was young, I was really inspired by people who were able to overcome adversity and become powerful and influential people. I was interested to learn more about what makes people who they are, and to find out about how to help people build on their strengths and reduce their difficulties. My journey in my career has been full of ups and downs, and I have been inspired by many people along the way; I have met some amazing professionals and teachers who made me want to work hard, learn more and be better. I have also met some incredible patients who have had such a powerful impact on me and enabled me to remain passionate about my job. I think what’s important to me is that I feel inspired on a regular basis, and luckily for me my job and the different aspects of it, enable this to happen!
