Steven here, The person who inspired me the most was my CBT therapist when I was under the care of a community mental health team. She showed me that most things were possible and I could achieve and be happy.

A few people have inspired me in the last ten years or so. Some are mental health nurses and professionals whose example I want to follow. Some are service users whose bravery and strength in living with mental illness demonstrates the true strength of human character, and they’ve always been the most loving, compassionate, tolerant people. There are academics and tutors who’ve challenged the existing practices and some really inspirational clinical leaders who’ve been mature and intelligent enough to allow their practice to be questioned.

Those who work together to make things better are the ones I want to work with.

Richard: Many people over the years, a couple of teachers at school, then years later I met my first art therapist, I thought I can do that! Along the way many colleagues have inspired me, their dedication to sticking with a difficulty and being completely true to themselves, not floundering and always responding with hope and creativity. I have also been inspired by the very service users I work with, the courage it takes to ask for help and to re learn what it means to trust someone again, that takes a brave soul.

mandy : doing voluntary work alongside two good art therapists (before doing the training) inspired me
I also did some brief workshops where I could see the power of using art to express and explore for myself

Hi Nathalie, that is a great question. When I was in school I met Mother Theresa in Calcutta, India and she said being a doctor is one of the best things you can do as you are giving back to the community and helping others. She dedicated her life to helping others and she was an absolute inspiration to me. In time, I met other people who weren’t necessarily famous but were inspirational in the way they taught and worked. I try to learn the best bits from each person I meet.

Edelle saw how much passion her oldest friend has as a nurse which inspired her. Jen says her mum inspired her as she was a ward sister. Gemma was inspired by an orthopaedic surgeon during her work experience. Emma remembers volunteering at a home for people with mental health problems and the staff there inspired and encouraged her.
