Shehla was voted the winner of the General Practice Zone in June 2017. Here she writes about donating her prize money to a local project aimed at widening participation in medicine, and the other engagement and outreach she has been involved with since I’m a Medic, including visiting her former college to help students with medical school applications. Summative Evaluation Report of January 2019 activity[/caption]
I’m a Medic, supported by Health Education England (HEE) set out to address a gap in outreach provision. The pilot programme in January 2019 was aimed at Year 8 students in schools that get below average outreach from medical schools.
The aim was to show students the breadth of career opportunities in the NHS and help them feel that some of those careers could be for them. This evaluation finds that I’m a Medic helps students see the breadth of jobs and routes available to them, and that they could find a career in the NHS.
Using qualitative methods such as analysis of questions asked, focus groups, interviews and open-ended survey questions, the evaluation also highlighted that I’m a Medic has some rare qualities that make it particularly effective. Continue reading
During every event we ask the healthcare team and moderators to select the students who stood out for them: the students they thought asked the best questions, or engaged most in the live chats.
Well done to all of the student winners, and everyone who took part. There were so many interesting questions, and comments, but there could only be one winner in each zone. So, for fantastic engagement during the event, for posting brilliant questions and comments, the student winners below will each receive a certificate and a gift voucher.
Winner: Eliza, St Katherine’s School
Winner: Faith, The Wellington Academy
After taking part in I’m a Medic, we ask the students to answer a few questions to help us gauge their attitudes towards healthcare and the NHS. We randomly choose one student who filled in the questions to win a voucher. That student is 825prmb42. Continue reading
