I don’t think I would say “gave up on”. I went to school in Scotland, so we were allowed to study 7 standard grades and 5 highers. We had to do English and Maths for both, so our options were pretty limited. I really didn’t enjoy history or geography at school, and the only other subject in that “column” was latin. As I already planned to do medicine I thought Latin would be really helpful, and it really was! I prioritised Biology & Chemistry as I really enjoyed them and got good grades in them. I also knew that most medical schools prioritised them or entry.
When I was picked my GCSE options I really struggled as I had 6 subjects I wanted to do but I could only pick three of them. I wanted to carry on with French, Spanish, History, Geography, Music and to start business studies. In the end I chose Spanish, History and Geography, but then did French as an extra subject after school. I decided to do history over music because I was slightly better at it, but also because I was still going to be able to play in the school bands which I really enjoyed so I didn’t have to exactly give up on music.
When it came to A Levels I found the choices much easier as I knew which things I enjoyed so they were the ones that I carried on with!
