In an ambulance there is a huge amount of equipment. If you have ever seen the back of an ambulance there are cupboards all over the inside which contain a range of lifesaving and emergency equipment. For example we carry 2 different types of longboard (or spinal board) – the main ambulance stretcher – lots of manual handling and extraction equipment for when patients need moving from difficult places or are trapped in cars – a ventilator to assist breathing – blankets and bedding. We also carry some more specialized equipment to treat a range of emergencies such as a burns pack / trauma pack / collars / head blocks.
The main 2 pieces of equipment are the green bag and the monitor – these are taken into every emergency and carry all we need to treat an emergency patient.
The strangest piece of equipment we carry is a small drill for drilling into bones (as paramedics are able to give lifesaving drugs into the bloodstream within bones)
This just scratches the surface of whats in the back of an ambulance.
