I was born this way, I’m afraid. It’s a recessive gene – I have one ginger grandparent on my mum’s side, and a different ginger grandparent on my dad’s side. So I am the only natural redhead in my immediate family, and both my own children are blonde like their dad. But as it is a recessive gene, I will have passed them both a copy – and there’s a good chance they would have a red headed child if they had a child with another carrier!
I have black hair but my dad was a red head/strawberry blonde. So if I have a baby with a red headed person there would be a 50% chance for me to have a red headed child (who may have tanned skin like me!) Genetics is amazing!
