Nice question Jess! I remember really enjoying the placements I had as a medical student- in elderly care or in a hospice, in cardiology or surgery, or maternity or on the childrens ward- it became clear to me that the only career would be one that covered them all- GP for me!
General Practice attracts people like me who always thought they’d end up here and people who find that a particular speciality isn’t for them and they value the qualities of a career in General Practice- talking and developing relationships with patients and families over time in the community, where levels of trust and satisfaction are generally higher.
I initially wanted to be a nurse but a teacher helped me aim to bigger things and so I became a doctor. I now work as a doctor, teacher, leader, author and actor so I am doing everything I love in one place!
There was a phase when I thought I could be a doctor…not quite sure what happened to that thought…I think my school, at the time, did not really promote medicine ..makes me sound like a dinosaur!!
