We didn’t have an option for science- it was a must for us for GCSEs, the options were for subjects like Geography or History, Music or Art or PE or 2nd Language.
I then chose to do sciences for A level- Physics Chemistry Biology and Maths, with the choice of dropping one if it got too hard. I thought the 4 sciences would leave me with alot of choices when it came to picking a University course as I hadn’t got a clear idea of what I wanted to do when I was 16. I thought “this’ll leave as many doors open to me as possible”
Most medicine courses require chemistry at A level, and some want biology as a second science too. There are a small number of courses, though, that are designed for people who haven’t done A level science. These take an extra foundation year at the start if the course. You can see the details of those in the annual Entry Requirements for Medical Schools booklet at https://www.medschools.ac.uk/media/2032/msc-entry-requirements-for-uk-medical-schools.pdf
