I didn’t start out wanting to be a GP, I wanted to be a nurse. When I decided to do medicine, if I’m honest, whilst at school, I didn’t know any other type of doctor existed other than a GP!
Once I started studying I realised how many opportunities there were. Children, women, adults, mentally ill people, prisons….. the list is endless and I loved every part of my university course. My first ever job once I’d qualified was in brain surgery and I was hooked. I trained to be a surgeon, specialising in brains, but then realised I could do similar work as a brain radiologist (X-ray doctor). I then had the chance of a lifetime to go to drama school at the age of 30 and took the place. I left medicine for a while but really missed it. General practice found me when I returned to medicine. It means I can do everything I love all in one job. It’s amazing. So I guess I’ve come full circle…. back to the only medical job I knew in school. A GP.
