Injuries are a relatively common consultation but they’re a fairly small proportion of the work we do, compared to care and review of mental health or long term physical conditions like asthma, heart disease or diabetes. Most of the work we do involves the diagnosis, monitoring and improving the control of these conditions in a way that works for the patient and their circumstances.
Of the injuries we do see, back, shoulder and knee injuries tend to be the commonest and depending on the nature of the injury, there are many different ways GPs and their teams can manage the problem, with medication, supports, exercises, therapies as hopefully the injury improves over time, with further scans or specialist opinion if things aren’t improving.
PS Weirdest injury would be my own- I dislocated both sides of my jaw yawning when in a hotel in London. The staff did giggle when they asked me my job, as it’s very difficult to talk when your jaw is dislocated- imagine speaking with your mouth open at least 5cm wide and not able to close it!
