Initially, it was the bottom of my list of jobs I wanted to do when I was 16. I hated the idea of long hours, dealing with blood and the long time it would take to train.

However, all the jobs above it on my list I didn’t feel would have been as fulilling over a lifetime. I have no regrets picking medicine because I am in a career which teaches me to become a better human being every day. When I retire, I will hopefully be happy that I picked a career which would make me a better human being because you are dedicated to helping others, often when they are having the worst days of their lives.

This made learning to get used to blood, long hours and long training more than worthwhile!

I was in hospital as a kid and was inspired by the doctors around me. I also love science and really love talkijgn to and interacting with people so being a doctor was a no brainer for me! I couldnt do a job where I didnt talk to people for a living. (though that is the best and sometimes the hardest part of the job)

I really enjoy learning about what different medicines do and the science behind them. Now I see patients and hold clinics of my own, I feel like I am making a difference to patients healthcare needs.

My mum was a nurse so she was my inspiration but I didn’t necessarily want to be doing the hands on care but through medicine I was able to spend time helping them to improve their health and wellbeing.

I’ve moved into this work after being a nurse for many years because I wanted to be more independent and do everything I could for my patients without going and asking a doctor to do something for me e.g. prescribe some pain killers or request a chest xray. I had to do extra training (a 3yr Masters degree) but it was worth it

I don’t work in medicine but I work in a team that helps to make sure the clinical staff have the right skills and knowledge to provide high quality patient care.
