• Question: What universities do you think would be good to go down the medical path?

      The University of Nottingham has a good reputation for medicine and they offer courses in other parts of the East Midlands.

      If you want to study medicine
      – check the entry requirements
      – get some experience of caring such as in a care home or volunteering in a local group for older people
      – talk to the universities you want to apply to. Attend open days if you can and talk to the students currently enrolled there. They will often tell you things they like about a course.

      A lot are excellent. I would check the university ratings – both generally and for medicine. Then definitely check out the hospitals that are linked with that medical school & make sure they are good because that is where you will get your clinical placements.

      Different universities have different course styles of teaching. Look around to see which ones have a course that might suit the way you would like to learn.

      There is no one right university for anyone. You need to look into things like:
      – the teaching style. Some have more lectures, some have more hands on learning earlier – neither is right, but you need to think about how you learn
      – their teaching and research ratings, which are online
      – Where you will live, including whether you will have good public transport links to your placements or need to drive. And don’t forget to think about where you will be happy – medical degrees are a long time. If you have a hobby that matters to you, will you be able to keep it up? If it matters to you to be able to see relatives, can you get home easily or is it just too far?
      – Will you need to work part time in your early years, and if you do, does the course structure allow for that? One of the things that put me off applying to one or two of the universities that I considered was they made it clear that I would not have time to work part time (one of them even openly said “most of our students are from good enough socio economic backgrounds not to need to”) and I knew my parents weren’t rich enough to keep bailing me out and my loans wouldn’t cover everything.

      We have a brand new Medical School opening this year so we are very excited – the Three Counties Medical School at the University of Worcester. However you need to go where is right for you. I would always advise to go and have informal visits, they can tell you a lot not just about the course but also about the type of experience you will get. As the others have said look at their ratings and any student feedback pages. Also start looking now at what you need for entry requirements (not just the academic A levels but other skills e.g. sports/music etc.) as it can be very competitive.

      Lincoln and Nottingham University offer some fabulous courses and support
